Worldline adopts first global ISO 20125 standard for sustainable digital services
Providing companies with a common framework to measure, reduce and manage digital emissions.
Worldline, a European leader in payment services, adopts ISO/IEC 20125-1:2026, the world’s first international standard for the eco-design of digital services. The standard gives enterprises a practical framework to measure, reduce and manage the environmental impact of their digital operations while supporting broader ESG and net-zero strategies.
Organisations increasingly face pressure from customers, investors, regulators and procurement teams to demonstrate environmental progress. “Until now, they have lacked a consistent, internationally recognised methodology for improving the sustainability of digital services and proving measurable results to stakeholders. ISO/IEC 20125-1:2026 changes that.” – according to the press release.
“Worldline led the two-year international collaboration to develop this standard, which defines 32 eco-design practices to help organisations improve digital services efficiency and embrace digital sufficiency: building and maintaining only what is needed, prioritizing value, reducing resource use and considering a service’s entire lifecycle.” – the company said.
Sébastien Mandron, CSR Director at Worldline, said: “For the first time, enterprises have an internationally recognised framework that aligns digital transformation with sustainability objectives. The standard turns digital responsibility from a strategic aspiration into operational reality.”
“The benefits extend beyond environmental impact. The standard provides a credible framework for responding to growing customer sustainability requirements, improving procurement credentials and demonstrating measurable ESG progress. By establishing a common language for environmental performance, it enables organisations that build digital services and those that procure them to evaluate sustainability using shared, verifiable criteria.” – the company explained.
Vincent Courboulay, co-founder and Head of the INR Academy at the Institut du Numérique Responsable, which was one of the contributing organisations to the development of the standard added: “This standard creates a shared understanding between service providers and their customers. It transforms responsible digital principles into concrete, measurable commitments that both sides can track and verify.”
ISO/IEC 20125-1:2026 is now available from ISO and national standards bodies worldwide.
