Plaid and Sierra partner to move AI agents from conversations to business outcomes
For decades, the entry point for financial services was a branch, then a website, then an app. Now it is a conversation with an AI agent. To date those conversations, whether over chat, email, or phone, have mostly been one-and-done. A customer has a question, and the agent answers it.

Last month Sierra launched Horizon, a platform that enables agents to proactively engage over days, weeks, or months, figuring out the next steps required to refinance a loan, collect an overdue payment, or settle an insurance claim. These business outcomes aren’t achieved in a single conversation. They require agents to orchestrate workflows over time, and at key moments, access the right financial information to move the process forward.
Through our partnership, customers can now securely connect their bank accounts with Plaid directly within Sierra’s agent. This creates entirely new customer experiences. People can make payments or verify their finances without leaving the conversation. The agent can then use that information to complete longer-running tasks like refinancing a loan.
Delivering business outcomes with trusted financial data
Take a loan application. Today, if a borrower falls just short of qualifying based on their credit score, the process often stalls. But an AI agent doesn’t have to stop there. It understands that a person’s cash flow might tell a different story. Using Plaid Link, it can request permission to access their bank account, assess their income and spending patterns, and continue the application. Instead of ending the conversation, the agent keeps the workflow moving toward an approved loan.
The opportunity extends well beyond lending. Whether it’s an insurance claim, fraud resolution or another complex financial workflow, the agent can determine the next step, request permission to access the information it needs, and keep working toward the desired outcome.
AI needs trust
Financial conversations require a higher bar than most AI interactions. That’s why the Plaid and Sierra integration is designed around security, consumer control, and human oversight, with accuracy and compliance as core design principles. Every interaction starts with explicit consumer permission through Plaid. Sierra adds safeguards that monitor AI responses, check for compliance, and enable humans to step in when needed.
New surfaces for customer interaction
Our partnership is a proof point serving the broader intelligent finance shift ahead. Plaid gives agents built on Sierra access to trusted, permissioned financial data precisely when they need it. Customers experience one consistent journey, while the agent handles the complexity behind the scenes to get the job done. Together, we’re moving AI agents beyond one-and-done conversations to delivering high-value business outcomes.
