Daniel Popescu

Head of Engagement @ Advisority

Daniel spent two decades in banking, in roles where cybersecurity was his responsibility — not that of an external department, not a vendor’s, and not something postponed to the next budget cycle. He built digital banks from the ground up, managed major technology transformations, and led difficult conversations with boards that did not always want to hear what needed to be said. Sometimes he won the argument before the incident happened. Other times, the organization understood only afterward.

His track record includes launching cloud-native digital banks, leading multi-billion-euro M&A integrations, and implementing cybersecurity programs during periods when GDPR, PSD2, and DORA all appeared simultaneously on the agenda — each bringing its own deadlines, penalties, and pressures. He understands what it means to secure a cashless payments ecosystem that must scale while remaining operational at the same time. These are not two separate objectives. They are the same objective, viewed from different sides of the same table.

After everything he has seen, Daniel reached a simple conclusion: the most expensive risk does not come from outside the organization, but from within — from the moment when no one has a clear picture of what is happening and no one has the authority to stop something in time. A well-written security policy saves nothing if the real decision is made two levels lower than it should be.

At the Banking 4.0 Summer School he will speak openly about how a secure cashless ecosystem actually works and where it most often fails. He will not bring hypothetical scenarios. He will bring real situations, with real stakes, from which he learned either because things went well — or precisely because they did not. Participants who come with honest questions will leave with more than they expected.
